Formula 1: Official Pirelli tests at Nevers Magny-Cours!

On Monday 1st March the exclusive Formula 1 tyre manufacturer, Pirelli, unveiled its official test calendar for 18-inch tyres that will be used from next season in the highest category of motorsport. After a long break due to COVID-19, testing of 18-inch tyres for 2022 has resumed and Pirelli confirmed that the full program will end at Nevers Magny-Cours with Alpine next September.

On the program: 10 sessions of development tests. In total, 28 days with nine Formula 1 teams.

This development program, which began in 2019 and was suspended in 2020 due to Covid-19, could also be subject to modifications this year due to the restrictions linked to the pandemic.

In 2021, the 18-inch tyre tests will involve both slick tyres (seven sessions) and wet tyres (three sessions) with four independent sessions and six sessions taking place immediately after a race weekend.

A major new change to the calendar is the addition of the Circuit of Nevers Magny-Cours where the final Pirelli tests will take place.

Tyre Development Test Calendar for 2022

“That’s why we also have a contingency plan. However, we have prepared a programme that should allow us to pick up where we left off in 2019 in order to finalise the specifications for the next generation of tyres based on the new regulations that will give Formula 1 a very different look from 2022 onwards.”

“I would like to thank all the teams for their support in providing simulations and mule cars, which are an excellent basis on which we can work.”

“This year we will be testing 18-inch slicks and wet prototypes: we have already started with three days of tests with Ferrari in Jerez, Spain, and we will finish the program in September at the French Circuit of Nevers Magny-Cours with Alpine.”
